Board of Directors

Joe Currie, DVM
Dr. Joe Currie is a retired small animal veterinarian who practiced in Moore County for 42 years. He was active in the founding of Moore Humane Society and served on its board for many years. His cat, Houdini, was adopted from Moore Humane Society. He currently resides in Seven Lakes North in North Carolina.
Tom Daniel, DVM
Dr. Tom Daniel, equine veterinarian with Southern Pines Equine Associates, is a long-time advocate of animal welfare organizations for both companion animals and horses in areas of cruelty prevention and rescue. Dr. Daniel worked on emergency rescue teams during Hurricane Floyd in Eastern North Carolina and is the proud owner of companion animals rescued in Hurricane Katrina.
Neal E. Jarest, U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel (Retired)
Neal currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of Operations for Opulence of Southern Pines, North Carolina. He recently completed a seven-month obligation in Baghdad, Iraq, as the Multi-National Corps Iraq's New Equipment Fielding Supervisory Senior Logistics Analyst. Neal has owned adopted track Greyhounds and currently owns two Italian Greyhounds. His military background serves CAC in support of military personnel with their companion animal spay/neuter needs.
Sherry Mortenson, Business Owner
Mrs. Mortenson is the business owner of the Faded Rose in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Sherry and her husband, Tom, retired to Southern Pines in 1995. They live with a dog, two horses, and nine previously feral cats. Sherry served as the President of the Pinehurst Business Guild and is the co-founder of Feral Friends of the Sandhills.
Bobbie Mudge, Grant Writer
Mrs. Mudge lives in Vass, North Carolina, with her husband, three horses, her Walker Hound (who was found on the side of the road) and her mixed breed dog from Moore County Animal Center, Carthage, North Carolina. Bobbie, who taught English, served on the Board of the Tewsbury Hospital Equestrian Farm in Massachusetts and presently serves on the Carolina Horse Park Board of Directors. Bobbie has experience in grant writing and will serve Companion Animal Clinic of the Sandhills in this capacity.
Joel Shriberg, General Contractor
Joel and his wife, Sandi, retired to Pinehurst from Boston, MA. They have five rescued cats and are involved in the Feral Cat Program with Animal Advocates of Moore County. As a general contractor, Joel serves as the head of the CAC building renovation committee.
Pat Tocco Smith, Writer/Photographer
Mrs. Smith is a photographer and writer with a background in public relations. Pat is a long-time animal advocate. She has rescued and adopted three dogs and four cats. Her Golden Retriever, Amazing Grace, was adopted from Moore Humane Society in Carthage, North Carolina.
Rocco Tuzio, CPA
Rocco retired to Pinehurst, NC, and provides accounting services for several businesses in the area. His extensive background in accounting along with his activity with several non-profit organizations provide him the expertise to serve as the CAC Treasurer.
Deborah Wilson, Professor
Mrs. Wilson, Professor of History, Geography and Political Science at Sandhills Community College, has been involved with animal welfare groups through service to Moore Humane Society in Carthage, North Carolina, for numerous years. She rescued Dolly and several cats from local animal shelters. An advocate for spay/neuter, Deborah continues to initiate ways to promote the mission of Companion Animal Clinic of the Sandhills.
Cynthia Williams, Ph.D. Psychologist
Dr. Williams has worked over twenty years in the corporate sector. Cynthia has a long history of involvement in animal causes. She was on the National Board of Canine Companions for Independence in the Oakland, California, SPCA. Cynthia served on the Board of Directors for Solutions for Animals in Hoke County, North Carolina, and most recently was involved in the Sanford Puppy Mill Rescue effort in Sanford, North Carolina with the Animal Defense League. She has four rescued dogs and two horses.
